I have been practicing the gentle art for about 8 months now. I currently weigh in around 290lbs. (I rececenly put 10 back on but was at 280 =-( ) I think I might qualify for big man status. lol 18 months ago I weighed about 350lbs and would break a sweat climbing a single flight of stairs. I am no shrimp now but I can make it through a 2 hour training session without calling for an ambulance...........lol

I did it by swimming 5 mornings a week. Swimming is easy on the joints, great for toning, improves flexibility, and, if you push yourself, great for cardio.

Sadly, I have been out of the pool for a couple of months but I plan on getting back to it. The good news is I have been "rolling" like a mad man.

Hey bro, I know this post is old, but I would like to sahre anyway. the best way to get through a plateau is to make training fun. introduce play drills to your game as much as possible. Have situational rolling competitions with your classmates. It will help remove the dullness of constant drilling and has the added benefit of make training much more productive because your opponents will not keep giving you the same pressure. As they get better, you're forced to get better and you probably won't even realize it.

God bless my friend!

Hey bigman,

I feel for ya brother. I am a bug guy myself and the conditioning factor makes a huge difference. I will be honest, forget about the weights for now dude. Lose the weight and fat, and then worry about getting stronger. The reality is, due to our size, we are already much stronger than the average person. it's necessary to move our bodies.

My personal opinion, look into the S.A.I.D. training series by JC Santana and Rhadi Ferguson. good stuff and much more functional than a lot of thte other stuff that is out there.

Depends what you want and how important a black belt is to you. For me, it also depended on how long I plan to keep on training (a long time).

Where I train an aikido black belt indicates you know the basics and can start to figure things out. About 3rd black belt that you start to display convincing competence. That's fine with me, now that I know that.

I did BJJ about 10 years ago, it was right for me at the time. Aikido is right for me now.

And, aren't all hobbies/passions discouraging at various times? I always hope it's a sign I'm about to figure something out and make it fun again :)
